Carlos Mena was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz,
Spain (1971). He studies at the prestigious Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (SCB) in
Basel (Switzerland) where he is supervised by his maestros R. Levitt and
R.Jacobs.
He has sung for audiences around
the world like: Gran Teatro de Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Real in Madrid,
Kontzerthaus in Vienna, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Alice Tully Hall in New
York, Fisher Symphony Hall in Detroit, Suntory Hall and Opera City Hall in Tokyo,
Osaka Symphony Hall, Sydney Opera House, Concert Hall in Melbourne...
He has played the opera
“Radamisto” (titlerole) by G.F.Haendel with production by the Festival of
Salzburg, at the Felsenreitschule in Salzburg, at the Dortmund Kontzerthaus, at
the Musikverein in Vienna and at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Besides, he has
sung “Orfeo” (role Speranza) by Monteverdi at the Staatsoper in Berlin,
“Rappresentazione di Anima e di Corpo” (Angelo Custode) by Cavalieri at the
Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, “Il Trionfo”(Disinganno) at the
Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg, and “Europera 5” by J.Cage in the Festival of
Flandes, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Britten (Oberon) in Teatro Real de
Madrid, “Acanio in Alba” by Mozart (Ascanio) in Barbican Center in London,
“Bajazet” by Vivaldi (Tamerlano) in Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao and “Viaje a
Simorgh” in Teatro Real de Madrid.
Among his records emphasizes “De
Aeternitate” (Mirare) with the prize “Diapason D’Or” as the best barock recital
in 2002 year in France, and “Et Iesum” (Harmonia Mundi) rewarded as “Best CD
2004” by CD Compact and as “The Editor’s Choice” by Gramophon. He has recorded
“Stabat Mater”-Vivaldi (Mirare) rewarded with the “10” of Repertoire and the
“Choc” of Le Monde. Last recordings are “La Cantada española en América” (HM),
“Stabat Mater” by Pergolesi (Mirare) and “Paisajes del Recuerdo” (HM).
